Microneedling

The way we feel in our skin is important. Having a healthy-looking, clean complexion can help increase our confidence levels, and when our skin develops wrinkles or has frequent acne breakouts, it can affect our self-esteem. If you are struggling with a certain skin condition and wish to improve the appearance of your skin, then Microneedling might just be the thing for you!

Microneedling is a dermaroller cosmetic procedure that is used to treat skin concerns via collagen production. Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment may be beneficial to individuals who are looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, and large pores. It's also a great anti-aging treatment!

What is Microneedling?

What is microneedling and how does it work? What areas and conditions of the body do they target? Who might be considered a good candidate for this procedure? What kind of results does it give? Find out all of the information about microneedling treatments in the section below.

  • What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a dermaroller cosmetic procedure that is used to treat skin concerns via collagen production. Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment may be beneficial to individuals who are looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, and large pores. It's also a great anti-aging treatment!

The purpose of the treatment is to generate new collagen and skin tissue for smoother,  firmer, more toned skin. Before going ahead with the surgery, consult with a medical professional. Learn more about microneedling and talk to your dermatologist to see if this is the right option for your skin.

  • How does it work?

Microneedling works by stimulating the skin's collagen production. Collagen is an essential protein that helps keep the skin looking youthful with a firm, smooth, and stretchy texture. As we age, our skin also ages and collagen naturally goes down, contributing to wrinkles and other skin conditions.

The idea is that pinpricks from the procedure cause slight injury to the skin and the skin responds by making new collagen-rich tissue. By stimulating the skin to make new tissue, collagen will also help firm the skin. However, it can take several months for a person to see the results of microneedling.

  • Who is a good candidate for microneedling?

Microneedling might be right for you if you have skin concerns that have not responded to home treatments or other dermatological procedures such as peels. A microneedling procedure can target the following skin concerns:

    • Fine lines and wrinkles
    • Scarring
    • Acne
    • Alopecia
    • Skin pigmentation issues
    • Roascea
    • Age spots
    • Reduced skin elasticity
    • Uneven skin tone
    • Large pores
    • Loose skin, such as after weight loss or liposuction

In addition to facial concerns, microneedling is sometimes used to treat stretch marks in other areas of the body. It's one of the most effective ways to treat stretch marks on the thighs and abdominal area.

  • How long do the results last?

The effects of the first round of microneedling treatments last on average between four and six weeks. The number of treatments and exact time frame will depend on your concerns, age, skin type, and how your skin responds to the treatment.

Unlike the other beauty services we offer here at Angie's, the effects of microneedling are not permanent, so to maintain them you will need to continue regular treatments. Once the maximum results have been achieved, your technician will schedule maintenance treatments, which you will need to attend every six to twelve months.

What To Expect: Cost, Preparation, Pain and Side Effects

So you're interested in getting a microneedling treatment, but want to know what to expect from it? How much money will the treatment cost you? How do you prepare for your first appointment? What risks and side effects might come along with the procedure? Learn all about that here.

  • How much does microneedling cost?

Microneedling is more expensive than other treatments at Angie's because the touch-up treatments are more frequent. The first round can cost anywehre from $300-$400 plus extra for monthly touch-ups. You'll have to attend regular appointments until final results are achieved. After that, you'll only need to go every six months to a year. If this is something you feel you need to get done, prepare to spend a couple thousand dollars. How expensive it is depends on the condition of your skin and how many things you want to be fixed.

  • What can I expect at my first appointment?

In this procedure, your technician makes small pricks under the skin with a pen-like tool. It is unlikely that you will notice the pin pricks after the procedure since they are so small. Your technician will move the tool evenly across your skin so that the new skin rejuvenates will be even too.

You will be given a topical anesthetic before your procedure to reduce the amount of pain. This is done about an hour before your treatment. Typically, the microneedling process only takes 30 minutes. The entire appointment should take a little over 2 hours to complete.

  • How do I prepare for my first appointment?

Before your procedure, talk to your technician about ways you can prepare so you can have the best possible outcome. You may need to stop taking certain medications such as ibuprofen and products for acne treatments well in advance of the procedure.

Your technician may also recommend that you stop using topical retinoids beforehand too. Doing this may reduce the risk of certain side effects. It's important to know these things and to listen to what your doctor or technician tells you to do before any kind of procedure.

  • What are the risks and side effects?

The medical community generally considers microneedling treatments to be safe and effective, but there are still some risks. The primary risk is skin irritation after the procedure. Other side effects could include:

    • Swelling
    • Discomfort at the site
    • Redness
    • Bruising
    • Dryness
    • Flaking of the skin

Bleeding is an uncommon side effect to microneedling, though it may be more likely to occur after a deeper treatment. Bleeding may also be more of a risk for people with bleeding disorders or people who take blood-thinning medications.  Serious side effects of the treatment include infection, skin pigment changes and allergic reactions to topical products.

Benefits Of Microneedling, Aftercare, and Home Rolling Devices

What are the benefits of microneedling? How do you care for your skin after getting a treatment? What's the difference between using a home roller device versus getting it done by a professional? Learn how to book a session here at Angie's.

  • What are the benefits of microneedling?

Microneedling has been proven to be a safe and effective way to rejuvenate skin and treat scars and wrinkles through scientific studies.

As a result of this treatment, people can expect to see a reduction in the appearance of large pores, fine lines, wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, and acne. Despite the fact that they require more frequent touch-ups, they are generally less expensive than laser treatments. Laser treatments can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 per appointment, depending on the patient's needs, the supplies required, and the length of time it takes to complete the treatment.

  • Aftercare

Aftercare tips for a microneedling treatment include:

    • Apply sunscreen every day for two weeks after the appointment. SPF is good for the skin!
    • Don't spend too much time in the sun for the first week after your microneedling procedure, as you'll be more prone to sun damage than usual
    • Use a topical antibiotic cream given to you by your technician to avoid further infection
    • Always wash your hands before touching your face
    • Don't apply makeup within 24 hours of microneedling
    • Avoid swimming pools and saunas, and any other activity that could cause excessive sweating for at least 72 hours
  • Home rolling devices versus microneedling

Many home microneedling devices are available. While these are much less expensive than sessions with a professional, there are some key differences between the approaches.

The needles on home devices are shorter and much more blunt than those used by technicians and other medical professionals. Home devices are not meant to penetrate the skin, which means that home treatments will not be as uncomfortable as professional versions. This also means that a home treatment will have different results. However, home devices tend to increase blood flow, which may temporarily brighten the skin.

Lastly, home devices are more difficult to clean.

  • Takeaway

Microneedling is generally a safe and effective procedure that can improve the appearance of the skin. It helps reduce the look of wrinkles, diminish scarring, and tighten or rejuvenate loose or aging skin.

While home microneedling is widely accessible and more comfortable than the professional version, home treatments will not provide the same results and may increase the risk of infection and side effects.

Speak to your dermatologist first before jumping the gun and going ahead with the procedure. Make sure you know that this is the right treatment for you.

Eyelash Extensions

Eyelash extensions are a form of semi-permanent makeup that creates the look of mascara or false eyelashes without applying any product. Unlike false lashes where a strip of lashes are applied to the skin, lash extensions are applied directly to the lash itself. The final look is meant to enhance your natural lashes with more length, fullness and lift. You can make it look as dramatic or as natural as you want them to be.

Eyelash extensions are a great option for women who have short, light lashes and want to make them longer without having to apply falsies.  Learn more about this treatment by clicking on the ‘Services’ tab at the top of our page
